Delhi Metro ranked 2nd in International Customer Satisfaction Survey

Delhi Metro has been ranked second among 18 international Metro systems in terms of overall customer satisfaction in an online customer survey conducted among the commuters of those Metro systems by ‘Global Metro Benchmarking Groups’, ‘NOVA and CoMET’. Delhi Metro, along with London DLR and Bangkok were the best three performers in the ‘Net Promoters Score’ (NPS) category that analyzed the likelihood of customers recommending the service to others on the basis of their satisfaction. The NPS is calculated by the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors (P-D = NPS). When asked to list out the three top priority areas, the respondents from Delhi along with 17 other Metros listed as ‘Availability’ as the most important requirement. Only New Castle and Hong Kong selected ‘Reliability’ as their most important area. Delhi Metro commuters rated reliability and crowding as the other two important priority areas. More than 41,000 respondents gave their feedback worldwide in this survey conducted online through the websites and social media links of 18 major Metros of the world from April 28th to May 25th earlier this year.
The Metro systems that participated in this survey apart from Delhi Metro were Hong Kong MTR, London Underground, Metro De Madrid, Paris RATP, Metro De Sandiago, Singapore SMRT, Barcelona TMB, Brussels STIB, Bangkok BMCL, London DLR, Istanbul Ulasim, Kualalumpur Rapid PL, Metropolitano De Lisboa, Montreal STM, Newcastle Nexus, Metro Rio and Toronto TTC. The survey was conducted as per the European Norm 13816 and the areas covered were - Availability, Accessibility, Ease of Use, Information Prior To Travel, Information During Travel, Reliability, Customer Care, Comfort, Crowding, and Security. DMRC is a member of the NOVA group of Metros which is a benchmarking community comprising of 17 Metros (small and medium size Metros) from around the world. It provides a platform to share experiences, ideas & good practices followed by member Metro systems across the world. It also helps in evaluating the performance of Metro systems by studying their key per performance indicators. The forum is co-ordinated by the Rail Transport Strategic Centre (RTSC) of Imperial College, London.

India's Mangalyaan enters Mars orbit

Creating history, ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) on Wednesday successfully entered the orbit of the red planet. With this, India has become the first nation in the world to have entered the Mars orbit in the first attempt. ISRO's MOM is also the cheapest such mission till now. European, US and Russian probes have managed to orbit or land on the planet, but after several attempts. At 7.17 AM, the 440 Newton Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) sizzled with life as it burnt along with the thrusters to slow down the MOM spacecraft to be captured by the Red Planet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the historic moment from ISRO's centre. "MOM has met Mangal," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said announcing the mission's success, after nerve-wracking final moments at the command centre of Indian Space Research Organisation.
MOM aims to study the Martian surface and mineral composition and scan its atmosphere for methane, an indicator of life. The spacecraft is equipped with five instruments, including a sensor to track methane or marsh gas, a colour camera and a thermal-imaging spectrometer to map the surface and mineral wealth of the red planet. The Rs 450-crore MOM is the cheapest inter-planetary mission. India is the first country to reach Mars in the very first attempt. European, American and Russian probes have managed to orbit or land on the planet, but after several attempts.

India and Australia seal civil nuclear deal for Uranium trade

India and Australia on Friday inked a significant civil nuclear agreement which will allow Canberra to supply uranium to the energy-starved country even as the two countries discussed ways to enhance cooperation in key areas of security and trade. The nuclear pact was signed after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott during which the two leaders discussed crucial bilateral, regional and international issues including the situation in Iraq and Ukraine. India and Australia, which has about a third of the world's recoverable uranium resources and exports nearly 7,000 tonnes of it a year, launched talks on uranium sales in 2012 after Canberra lifted a long-time ban on exporting the valuable yellowcake to Delhi to meet its ambitious nuclear energy programme. Aimed at promoting cooperation in the field peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the agreement recognizes India's commitment to and use of nuclear energy with a view to achieving sustainable development and strengthening energy security. Today's pact is significant given that Indian nuclear plants generate around 4680 MW of electricity, of which the 2840 MW was from indigenous uranium while 1840 MW was from imported fuel. The two Prime Ministers directed the negotiators to conclude the Administrative Arrangements pertaining to the civil nuclear pact at an early date.
