India's largest nuclear reactor at Kudankulam started generating electricity on a commercial basis on Wednesday. The reactor was made at a cost of over Rs. 8000 crores. The construction work was amid protests by activists who called it ‘unsafe’. India recently signed a deal for importing another 14 reactors from Russia. The first unit attained criticality, which is the beginning of the fission process, in July 2013. The second 1000 MW unit at Kudankulam is likely to come online in 2015, reports said.
