Sundar Pichai is new Google CEO

India-born Sundar Pichai will be the new CEO of Google under a major restructuring at the technology giant, as co-founder Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both multimillionaires, will head up a new company called Alphabet, which will wholly own Google.  In a surprise and significant re-organisation, Page announced the formation of a new parent company Alphabet Inc which will replace Google as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights. Page will be CEO of Alphabet, and Brin its president. Alphabet will hold onto Google as a subsidiary. Google shares will be converted into equivalent stock holdings in Alphabet, with the same rights – or lack of them. "We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represents language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!" said Page. Pichai will run Google's traditional search, advertising, video, browser, and operating system businesses – as he has effectively been doing for nearly a year now, anyway. Google will be slimmed down in other ways, Page said, without being precise. Pichai joined Google in 2004 and was the driving force behind Google Chrome browser and the Chrome OS. Initially, Pichai started with handling the ‘Google’ search toolbar in the upper right corner of Web browsers, well before the launch of Google’s own browser. This was the time when Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was still dominant across the world. The success of the Google Toolbar, was what helped build his reputation at the company.  Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has congratulated Shri Sundar Pichai on being appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Google Inc. "Congratulations Sundar Pichai. My best wishes for the new role at Google," the Prime Minister said.
