National League for Democracy has won a majority in historic general election of Myanmar, ending decades of military-backed rule. With more than 80% of seats declared, Aung San Suu Kyi's party has more than the two-thirds it needs to control parliament and choose the president.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has congratulated Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi on her party's election performance. The UN Chief described Sunday's poll as a "significant achievement" in Myanmar's transition away from military rule. He offered UN support to Myanmar to consolidate democracy and advance human rights. The US President Barack Obama has called his Myanmarese counterpart Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to congratulate them on the successful elections in the country.
