The ambitious odd-even scheme of Delhi govt, a first such intervention in the country to combat spiraling air pollution, got off to a decent start on New Year amid deployment of thousands of policemen. As the clock struck eight on Friday morning, the vehicular restriction policy came into effect with thousands of volunteers carrying roses also taking to the streets to assist traffic police in enforcing the pilot plan that will stay in force till 15th January.
There was considerable anxiety amongst the Delhiites over the rule, in run up to the appointed day, but when it finally came; people seem to be taking it positively. Friday being an odd numbered date, as per rule, only odd numbered cars were allowed to ply. However the rule did not apply to CNG powered cars as announced earlier. Delhi ministers and officials decided to lead form front. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal carpooled with Home Minister Satyendar Jain and Transport Minister Gopal Rai to office. Kejriwal also appreciated people's positive response for making the eve-odd scheme successful.
