Geeta Johri, Gujarat's first woman police officer, is now also its first woman police chief. The 1982 batch officer was appointed Director General of Police a day after the resignation of PP Pandey, an officer whose appointment was challenged because of the murder charges against him in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Mr Pandey stepped down a month before his tenure was to end. The officer's appointment as police chief last year, even though he is out on bail, was challenged in the Supreme Court by a predecessor, Julio Ribeiro.
Johri was the supervisory officer of the Sohrabuddin encounter case in 2006-07 when the CID (crime) investigated the case following the apex court’s directive. Later on, after the case was transferred to the CBI following a court order, the probe agency chargesheeted her for allegedly botching up the investigation. She is currently serving as Managing Director of the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation in Gandhinagar.
