Senior BJP leader and Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu will be the NDA candidate for the post of Vice President. The announcement was made by BJP President Amit Shah in New Delhi on 17th July 2017 after the Party Parliamentary Board meeting. He said, the decision was taken unanimously by the board. Mr Shah said, the name of Mr Naidu was earlier discussed with the NDA allies and is supported by them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Party President Amit Shah, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, J P Nadda, Thawar Chand Gehlot and Ananth Kumar were present in the meeting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, M Venkaiak Naidu is a fit candidate for the office of Vice President. After the announcement of the candidature of Mr Naidu, the Prime Minister in a series of tweet said, he knows Mr Naidu for years and has always admired his hard work and tenacity. He said, Mr Naidu, a farmer’s son, brings years of experience in public life and is admired across the political spectrum. Mr Modi said, the years of Parliamentary experience Mr Naidu has, will help him discharge the important role of Rajya Sabha Chairperson. Mr Naidu has been the National President of the Party from 2002 to 2004. He was elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998 and was re-elected to the house in 2004, 2010and 2016. Mr Naidu, by profession, Agriculturist, Political and Social worker has been associated with Politics from his college days in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
