Rajnish Kumar appointed new SBI chairman

Rajnish Kumar was on Oct 4, 2017 appointed chairman of the largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), replacing Arundhati Bhattacharya, who completes her one-year extended term on 6th October 2017. Mr. Kumar, who is now the managing director of the SBI, faces the daunting task of addressing the issue of huge non-performing assets (NPA) of the bank.
Rahnish Kumar joined SBI as probationary officer in 1980. In his banking career spanning three decades he had worked in various departments. Prior to this appointment, he was Managing Director (MD) Compliance and Risk and SBI board member. Before becoming MD, he headed SBI’s merchant banking arm, SBI Capital Markets, as managing director and CEO. Kumar also had worked as Chief General Manager, Project Finance and Leasing Strategic Business Unit. He also had held several key assignments across various business verticals, including two overseas assignments in Canada and United Kingdom.
